La historia de la Benidorm Fancy Dress Party comenzó alrededor de la década de 1990, y fue creada originalmente por un bar llamado The Sports Mans Retreat, que fue inaugurado en 1973 por Roger WILLIAMS. Roger mantuvo a los deportistas durante muchos años y fue el impulsor y fundador del Maratón de Benidorm. La Media Maratón de Benidorm se celebraba los días 17 o 26 de noviembre de cada año, para esta cita deportiva comenzaron a congregarse participantes procedentes de Gran Bretaña, la mayoría procedentes del mismo club de corredores.
La reunión anual de corredores creció en número y como resultado la media maratón de Benidorm se hizo extremadamente popular.
La razón para llevar un disfraz parece ser que fue el carácter deportivo recreativo de los británicos el que empezó a correr con estos disfraces en la media maratón. Con verdadero espíritu británico, tradicionalmente tras la carrera se reunían en el escenario del Hotel Ambassador para cantar y celebrar todos los participantes dando paso a la fiesta.
La media maratón animó un gran ambiente de fiesta en todos los bares hasta altas horas de la madrugada de la zona del Rincón de Loix de Benidorm (algunos bares de la zona son los pioneros de estas actividades, como The Sinatras & Western Saloon). Después de estos años cada vez son más los turistas que llegan a Benidorm para celebrar este maravilloso evento.
La Media Maratón coincidió originalmente con las fechas de las Fiestas de los Mineros Británicos junto con las Fiestas locales de Benidorm celebradas en la zona del Rincón de Loix. Por lo tanto, todos estos factores contribuyeron en gran medida al éxito de la Fiesta de Disfraces. Esta maravillosa fiesta aumenta año tras año originalmente en los primeros días con solo 80 participantes y ahora ha aumentado a 35.000 personas en el último recuento. El Desfile de Disfraces se celebra como el día principal de la semana de las Fiestas locales de Benidorm. Este evento se celebra el segundo o tercer jueves del mes de noviembre según el calendario.

The history of the Benidorm Fancy Dress Party began around the 1990s, and it was originally created by a bar called The Sports Mans Retreat, which was opened in 1973 by Roger WILLIAMS. Roger kept the Sportsmen´s going for many years and was the instigator and founder of Benidorm Marathon. The Benidorm Half Marathon was held on November 17 or 26 of each year, participants from Great Britain began to congregate for this sports event, most of them from the same Runners club.
The annual gathering of runners grew in numbers and as a result the Benidorm half marathon became extremely popular .
The reason behind wearing a fancy dress costume seems to be that it was the recreational sporty character of the British who began to run in these costumes for the half marathon. In true British spirit, traditionally, after the race, all participants would gather on the stage of the Ambassador Hotel to sing and celebrate, kicking off the festivities.
The half Marathon encouraged a great party atmosphere in all of the bars until the early hours of the morning in the Rincon de Loix area of Benidorm (some bars of the strip are the pioneers of these activities, like The Sinatras & Western Saloon). Following these years more and more tourists continue to arrive in Benidorm to celebrate this wonderful occasion.
The Half Marathon originally coincided with dates of the British Miners Holiday together with the local Benidorm Fiestas celebrated in the Rincon de Loix area. Therefore all these factors greatly contributed to the success of the Fancy Dress Party.
This wonderful party increases year upon year originally in the early days of having just 80 participants which has now risen to be 35,000 people at the last count.
The Fancy dress parade is celebrated as the main day of the week of the local Benidorm Fiestas. This event is held being on the second or third Thursday of the month of November depending on the calendar.
